Sgr-Jmu highway reopens partially for LMVs after 9 days

September 11, 2025 | Ayaan Wani

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been partially opened on Wednesday for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) including passenger vehicles after remaining closed for nine consecutive days due to massive landslides at Thard in Udhampur district.

A traffic police official said after remaining closed for nine consecutive days due to massive landslides at Thard in Udhampur district, the highway was partially reopened for passenger vehicles today.
“Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) were allowed to ply from 9.20 am while heavy traffic movement remains suspended until the road is fully restored,” he said.
The strategic 270-kilometre highway, which is the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, had remained closed since August 26 due to multiple blockages caused by heavy rains, flash floods and landslides.
It was briefly reopened on August 30, but closed again. In total, the highway remained blocked for 14 days.
The closure of the highway had resulted in over 4,000 vehicles getting stranded at various places on the highway.
The prices of essential commodities in the Valley had significantly increased due to continued closure of the highway.
Meanwhile, pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta Hills also remained suspended for the 16th consecutive day today.
The Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri highway, which was also closed due to a landslide near Rusool Mode in the Zojila belt, has reopened.
The Sinthan road has been restored as well.
Traffic on the inter-regional Mughal Road, which connects Jammu region’s Poonch district with Kashmir’s Shopian district, is moving smoothly, while the Batote-Doda-Kishtwar road remains closed due to landslides.
