Srinagar, Nov 5: Two forthcoming books by noted bureaucrat, author and linguist Dr A. H. Shah (JKAS), celebrating the life, literary contributions and multifaceted personality of renowned Kashmiri poet Ali Mohammad Shahbaz, have generated considerable anticipation among literary circles.
Titled Rah O Rasm-e-Shahbazi and Lore of the Falcon, the two books are dedicated to preserving and documenting the legacy of Shahbaz, fondly remembered as the Falcon of Mawar. The publications are expected to offer an extensive account of his poetry, literary achievements, social contributions and remarkable journey as a writer, orator, philanthropist and educationist.
Ali Mohammad Shahbaz was widely admired for his literary brilliance, powerful oratory and commitment to cultural and educational development. He was also the founder of Kashmir Markaz-e-Adab-o-Sakafat, an institution associated with the promotion of Kashmiri language, literature and cultural heritage.
The forthcoming publications are particularly significant because they seek to bring together different dimensions of Shahbaz's personality and intellectual contributions in a comprehensive manner.
Dr A. H. Shah, a JKAS officer, has earned recognition for his diverse literary and linguistic abilities alongside his administrative responsibilities. An accomplished orator, translator and author, he has demonstrated a sustained interest in language, literature and history.
His book Sharda Se Sansad Tak was released by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in May this year at a function held at Tagore Hall, Srinagar. Another of his books was released in Kupwara in October, further reflecting his continuing engagement with literary and intellectual pursuits.
The two forthcoming publications on Ali Mohammad Shahbaz represent another important contribution to his literary journey.
According to those familiar with the work, the books together comprise around 700 pages and are the outcome of extensive study, research and critical examination. They document Shahbaz's poetry, achievements and significant events of his life while placing his literary contributions in a broader historical and cultural context.
Dr Shah's command over several languages, including Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Pahari, English and Kashmiri, has reportedly helped him undertake an in-depth examination of Shahbaz's literary works. His understanding of history and linguistic traditions has also enabled him to approach the subject from multiple perspectives.
One of the distinctive features of the publications is their critical engagement with Shahbaz's poetry. Rather than limiting the exercise to biographical narration or appreciation, the author has reportedly examined individual couplets in detail, presenting interpretations, arguments and contextual explanations.
Such an approach is expected to make the books valuable not only for admirers of Shahbaz but also for researchers, students of literature and readers interested in the evolution of Kashmiri literary traditions.
The publication of these works also assumes importance at a time when preserving the contributions of regional literary figures has become increasingly necessary. Kashmir has a rich tradition of poetry, mysticism, oral literature and intellectual expression. However, much of this heritage requires systematic documentation, critical interpretation and wider dissemination among younger generations.
The life and work of Ali Mohammad Shahbaz provide an important subject in this regard. His contribution extended beyond poetry to cultural organisation, education, philanthropy and public engagement. Documenting such a personality helps preserve not merely an individual's achievements but also an important chapter of Kashmir's literary and cultural history.
Literary enthusiasts and admirers of Shahbaz are eagerly awaiting the release of the two volumes. The anticipation has been likened to the excitement with which people wait for the sighting of the Eid moon.
With Rah O Rasm-e-Shahbazi and Lore of the Falcon, Dr A. H. Shah is seeking to give a comprehensive literary tribute to a personality whose words, ideas and contributions continue to resonate with admirers across Kashmir.
The two books are expected to add meaningful material to the growing body of literature documenting Kashmir's distinguished literary personalities and cultural heritage.
