Silbata: Stone of Kashmiri heritage

January 28, 2026 | Furqanul Islam

Bandipora, Jan 27: The Silbata, or "Maaaz Kaein" in Kashmiri, is more than Just a stone – it's a symbol of Kashmiri heritage. This beautifully crafted stone is the backbone of the iconic Wazwaan, the traditional Kashmiri feast that's a treat for the senses. "The taste it gives is epic and intense," says Abdul, a local artisan, highlighting its significance. From festivals like Eid to intimate family gatherings, the Silbata is a constant presence. It's also a witness to countless marriages, infusing every moment with calmness and serenity. Known as "Neaam" in Kashmiri, this semi-circular grinding stone is used to grind spices, vegetables, and more. Despite the advent of electronic grinding machines, the Silbata remains an essential part of Kashmiri households. Artisans work tirelessly, often in secret, to preserve this ancient craft. One artisan shared, "This area is completely banned; we do this through secret and hidden." Their dedication is admirable, and their craftsmanship is a testament to the enduring legacy of Kashmiri culture
