Khudwani, Aug 31: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) showcased its rich legacy of rice research, biodiversity conservation and climate-resilient crop technologies through a live exhibition of Temperate Rice Biodiversity at the Mountain Research Centre for Field Crops (MRCFC), Khudwani.

Established in 1942, MRCFC has over eight decades of experience in developing rice, rapeseed and wheat varieties suited to Kashmir's diverse agro-climatic conditions, ranging from temperate valley floors to cold high-altitude areas exceeding 2,000 metres. The exhibition showcased high-yielding rice varieties alongside the latest production and crop-protection technologies.
A key highlight of the centre's work is its germplasm conservation programme, which maintains a rich collection of indigenous landraces and exotic introductions, preserving an important living repository of Kashmir's rice biodiversity. MRCFC also holds national significance as the Nodal Centre for Rice Blast Screening in India, making its crop-protection research relevant beyond the Kashmir Valley.
Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganie, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Kashmir, attended the exhibition as Chief Guest. He was accompanied by Director Extension, Chief Agriculture Officers of Kulgam and Anantnag, officers and scientists of SKUAST-Kashmir and other dignitaries.
During the field visit, Prof. Ganie reviewed the ongoing research trials and appreciated the centre's comprehensive research programme, particularly its efforts in germplasm conservation. Describing MRCFC as a role model for the University, he said its work had earned recognition at national and international platforms. He also highlighted its role as India's Nodal Centre for Rice Blast Screening, underscoring its national importance in crop-protection research.
Prof. Ganie appreciated the scientists for their contributions, encouraged them to continue their research efforts and reaffirmed the University's commitment to supporting the farming community. He also emphasised the importance of Climate-Smart Agriculture and Resource Use Efficiency as key priorities for the region's future agricultural development.
The Vice Chancellor further announced that the South Campus, Faculty of Agriculture, SKUAST-Kashmir, will be operationalised from the current season, marking an important step towards strengthening agricultural education, research and extension in the region.
The Director Extension highlighted the contribution of MRCFC-bred varieties to rice cultivation across the Kashmir Valley, noting their role in improving productivity and supporting its expansion over the years.
