SMC Orders Citywide Inspection of Illegal Constructions After Inspector’s Arrest

August 20, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar, August 20: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has directed ward officers across the city to identify and scrutinise illegal constructions and building deviations in their respective areas following the arrest of a junior building inspector in an alleged bribery case.

The civic body has asked all ward officers to submit details of unauthorised constructions and deviations and examine such cases within their jurisdictions without delay.

The directive comes a day after the Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau apprehended SMC Junior Building Inspector Gazala Akhter in Mominabad, Batamaloo, while she was allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹10,000 from a complainant over the construction of two structures.

The latest instructions have brought renewed attention to the SMC’s building enforcement and monitoring system, particularly the manner in which construction activity and alleged violations are being assessed across different wards.

Ward officers have been directed to carry out scrutiny of reported violations promptly and provide the required details to the corporation.

The move signals an intensified focus by the civic authorities on unauthorised construction and deviations across Srinagar.
