Snowfall in upper reaches, rains lash valley

October 16, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar, Oct 15: For the second consecutive day, light snowfall was reported in the higher reaches of Kashmir on Thursday, while rainfall lashed several parts of the plains, bringing a chill to the region.

Officials said snowfall was reported at Sinthan Pass, the Mughal Road, higher reaches of Kupwara, Gurez and Tulail in Bandipora, and along the Zojila-Gumri axis. Several higher-altitude areas of Ladakh, including Drass, Zanskar and Sankoo, also received snowfall.
Widespread rain lashed the region, including Srinagar, during the night and continued till Thursday morning, as the weather remained cloudy in most parts of the Valley.
The weather conditions brought a noticeable dip in temperatures, particularly in higher-altitude areas.
The snow led to the closure of a few vital roads, including the Mughal Road – the alternate road link connecting the Valley with the Jammu region.
The authorities have pressed men and machinery into service to clear the roads, where traffic movement would be allowed once the snow-filled stretches are cleared.
According to the Meteorological department, Kupwara recorded the highest rainfall at 26.2 mm during the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am today, followed by Qazigund at 23.6 mm and Gulmarg at 20.4 mm. Pahalgam received 16.8 mm of rainfall, while Srinagar recorded 16.4 mm during the same period.
Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness generally cloudy weather with light to moderate rainfall at many places on Thursday, while light snowfall is expected over higher reaches, according to the weather forecast. Thunderstorms, gusty winds and hailstorms are also likely at isolated places.
“The weather is expected to remain generally dry on October 16, although brief spells of light rain may occur at isolated to scattered places. From October 17 to 24, J&K is likely to experience generally dry weather,” the MeT official said.
