Sonia congrats Kejriwal, differences emerge in Cong day after poll debacle, Chacko resigns

February 13, 2020 | New Delhi/UNI

A day after the Congress witnessed debacle for the second consecutive time in the Delhi assembly polls, differences emerged between senior party leaders and AICC in-charge of Delhi PC Chacko, who on Wednesday resigned from the post.
According to party sources, Mr Chacko has sent his resignation letter to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.
Mr Chacko has quit a day after the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Subhash Chopra resigned, taking moral responsibility of the dismal performance of the grand old party.
Congress could not open its account in the 70-member assembly polls, where Aam Aadmi Party bagged 62 seats and the BJP won 8 seats.
Meanwhile, Ms Gandhi today called Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and congratulated him for the thumping victory in the polls.
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi had also congratulated Mr Kejriwal, on Tuesday.
According to party sources, Mr Chacko's recent remarks over the Congress' poor performance have created uproar in the party ranks.
Mr Chacko has blamed three-time Delhi Chief Minister, Late Shiela Dikshit for Congress's poor performance. He said that the downfall of the grand old party started in 2013 when Late Dikshit was the Chief Minister and the new entry of AAP took away the entire Congress vote bank.
Senior Congress leader Milind Deora criticised Mr Chacko and said the latter's remarks was 'unfortunate'.
"Sheila Dikshit ji was a remarkable politician and administrator. During her tenure as Chief Minister, Delhi was transformed and Congress was stronger than ever. Unfortunate to see her being blamed after her death. She dedicated her life to Congress and the people of Delhi", Mr Deora tweeted.
Another party leader and national spokesperson, Pawan Khera also criticised Mr Chacko and tweeted, "Just a data point. In 2013, when we lost, Congress vote share in Delhi was 24.55 per cent. Sheila ji was not involved in 2015, when the vote share slipped to 9.7 per cent. In 2019 when she was back in charge, the vote share came up to 22.46 per cent."
In another incident, Sharmistha Mukherjee, chief of Congress' Delhi Mahila Morcha and national spokesperson slammed senior leader P Chidambaram for 'gloating' over AAP win.
"With due respect sir, just want to know- has Congress outsourced the task of defeating BJP to state parties? If not, then why are we gloating over AAP victory rather than being concerned about our drubbing? And if 'yes', then we (PCCs) might as well close shop", Ms Mukherjee, the daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, said.
Mr Chidambaram, moments after the results announced had tweeted, "AAP won, bluff and bluster lost. The people of Delhi, who are from all parts of India, have defeated the polarising, divisive and dangerous agenda of the BJP. I salute the people of Delhi who have set an example to other states that will hold their elections in 2021 and 2022".
