Just days after Kashmir was shaken by the news of a young girl committing suicide in north Kashmir after being repeatedly raped by her father, another gory spectacle has unfolded in the same region. This time, the victim is a three-year-old girl who has been allegedly raped by a boy. Swinging into action, the J&K police has swiftly arrested the accused boy and investigations have been started to ascertain the facts in the case. The disclosure has naturally sparked massive anger in Kashmir. While some netizens are demanding that the victim must be rehabilitated by the state government and indeed some well-meaning people have offered to adopt her, others are seeking swift inquiry into the case and exemplary punishment for the culprit. This is not the first incident to have happened in Kashmir and it certainly won’t be the last. Crimes against women are on the rise across the world and Kashmir is no exception. Rape figures third in the number of cases of crime against women in Jammu and Kashmir, official data reveals. The silence of victims adds to the problem. According to one survey, out of the women who have experienced spousal or sexual violence, only 16 percent have sought help while 77 percent of the women never spoke about it. Of the various sections of Ranbir Penal Code, second largest number of reported cases of crime against women is cruelty by husband and relatives. Being rooted in Sufi traditions, such crimes barely took place in our peaceable society just few years ago. Forget rapes of minors, even the affair of a boy with a girl used to attract the wrath of elders in the society. There was a sense of respect among younger generation towards their elders. But the advent of the so called modernity has changed it all. We have lost the concept of eldership as a result of which our society has broken into fragments which no adhesive can fix. This loss is reflecting in the way our younger generation approaches the day to day problems in their lives. With money matters attaining more importance over morality matters, women are increasingly becoming targets of our patriarchal society. Due to the archaic social structures, women rarely speak out about the ordeal that they have to face. We as a society need to speak out collectively about these issues. Only then we can secure a promising and fulfilling future for ourselves.
