
Srinagar, June 10: Minister for Youth Services & Sports Satish Sharma on Wednesday stressed the importance of sports and physical activities in steering youth away from drug abuse and promoting a healthy, disciplined lifestyle.
Speaking at an awareness programme titled “Say Yes to Sports, No to Drugs” at International Delhi Public School (IDPS), Srinagar, the Minister said sports play a crucial role in character building, fitness, discipline and social empowerment. The event was organised under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan to raise awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse.
Sharma said the fight against drug addiction requires collective efforts from educational institutions, parents, civil society and government agencies. He urged students to become ambassadors of the anti-drug campaign and adopt healthy lifestyles.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to youth development, the Minister said efforts are underway to strengthen sports infrastructure and create greater opportunities for young talent across Jammu and Kashmir.
MLA Hazratbal Salman Sagar called for coordinated measures to tackle the growing drug menace, while Commissioner Secretary Youth Services & Sports Shahid Iqbal Choudhary highlighted sports as a powerful platform for youth empowerment and social change.
Secretary J&K Sports Council Nuzhat Gul emphasized expanding grassroots sporting opportunities, while RTO Kashmir Qazi Irfan urged students to make informed choices and stay away from drugs.
The programme witnessed participation from students, teachers, sports enthusiasts and members of civil society, with awareness materials showcasing the dangers of substance abuse and the benefits of sports.
