Srinagar, Mar 30: Srinagar witnessed significant waterlogging on Monday following heavy rainfall that hit the city and surrounding areas, causing traffic snarls and disruption in normal life. Several low-lying areas, including Rainawari, Rajbagh, Sonwar, and Batmaloo, were reportedly inundated, leading to inconvenience for commuters and residents.
Officials from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) confirmed that the drainage system in some parts of the city struggled to cope with the sudden downpour, resulting in water accumulation on main roads and residential localities. Municipal teams were immediately deployed to clear stormwater drains and pump out water from critical areas.
The Srinagar Traffic Police reported traffic congestion at key junctions, urging motorists to exercise caution and avoid waterlogged streets. Public transport, including buses and auto-rickshaws, faced delays due to slow-moving traffic and partially submerged roads.
Local residents expressed concerns over recurring waterlogging during the rainy season, citing damage to property and disruption to daily routines. “Every time it rains heavily, our streets get flooded. Children and elderly people face difficulties moving around, and the water sometimes enters houses,” said a resident of Rajbagh.
The Meteorological Department (MeT) has issued a forecast warning of intermittent showers over the next two days, advising authorities and citizens to remain alert. Officials have also cautioned residents in low-lying areas to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary travel.
The SMC stated that plans are underway to improve drainage infrastructure and enhance maintenance of stormwater channels to mitigate such situations in the future. Meanwhile, emergency services remain on standby to respond to any incidents arising from waterlogging or related hazards.
Authorities have appealed to citizens to cooperate with municipal teams, avoid dumping waste in drains, and report blocked drainage points to ensure timely clearance.
The recent rainfall serves as a reminder of the need for better urban planning and drainage management in Srinagar, especially during peak monsoon and pre-monsoon periods.
