Project Overview


Route & Distance

The planned 70 km road will connect Srinagar to Pahalgam through Khrew, Wahab Sahib, Syeda bad (Pastuna), Karmula Tral, and Lehndajan. This new route is expected to reduce the travel distance by approximately 30 kilometers compared to the existing path via Anantnag and Bijbehara

Pending Approvals

The project's advancement is contingent upon environmental clearances and the availability of funds. Specifically, the construction requires the acquisition of 108 Kanals (approximately 13.5 acres) of forest land and the felling of 845 trees

The Minister for Roads and Buildings confirmed that while the DPRs are ready, the project awaits necessary environmental approvals and funding allocations

Environmental Concerns and their remedies

Ecological Impact

Environmental groups, notably the Environmental Policy Group (EPG), have raised alarms about the potential ecological damage. Concerns include deforestation, disruption of wildlife habitats, and risks associated with constructing roads in seismically active zones but when it comes to the connectivity of regions and development of a region various forests have been destroyed in the world for the construction purposes we it is a concern there were the trees are endangered species but in Kashmir we have growing vegetative soil were if 800 trees are destroyed we can plant 10000 trees and possibility is they will be all in good stage in coming years so such factors hardly matter when government is serious about countries developments and progresses

Local Opposition

Residents of Khrew and surrounding areas, already affected by pollution from cement factories, fear that the new road could exacerbate environmental degradation and impact local agriculture, including saffron cultivation it is true they are in fear that it can exploit their environment and resources as they are in dilemma by previous projects of cement factories and other such allied industries but this time it is the construction of road from their localities the tourism will be boosted by the road connectivity there is no harm from the construction of roads through a locality it has always come with fortunes for the people living there they can install small stalls were they can earn their livelihood easily for the day they can open up hotels, restaurants, sports hubs amusement hubs to facilitate the tourists and people crossing the road from their areas
