Jammu and Kashmir continues to grapple with an intense heatwave, with Srinagar recording its hottest day of the season for the second consecutive day at 32.2°C.
Several other parts of the Valley also experienced unusually high temperatures. Qazigund recorded the highest temperature of the season at 33.0°C, while Kokernag touched 31.4°C. The popular tourist destination of Pahalgam saw a high of 27.2°C. In north Kashmir, Kupwara registered 29.9°C, whereas Gulmarg remained relatively cooler at 23.6°C.
The heatwave extended to the Jammu region, where Jammu city scorched at 40.0°C. Other areas such as Banihal, Batote, Bhaderwah, and Katra also reported temperatures exceeding 30°C.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, said temporary relief is expected with light rain and thundershowers forecast from Sunday evening through May 20. However, he cautioned that gusty winds may accompany the weather changes.
“Another brief heatwave spell is likely from May 21 to May 24,” Dr. Ahmad added, noting that light rainfall is expected to return around May 25.
The MeT Department has urged the public, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and pregnant women, to stay indoors during peak hours, remain hydrated, and take appropriate precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
