Srinagar surpassed the previous records on Thursday as the summer capital recorded the third highest-ever temperature in the month of May at 34.4 degree Celsius.
According to an independent weather forecaster, Faizan Arif Keng, Srinagar recorded the season’s highest day temperature today at 34.3 degree Celsius.
He said Srinagar has recorded the third highest-ever day temperature in the month of May in 133 years.
The previous record was 34.3 degree Celsius recorded on May 28, 1971, he said.
The temperature recorded stands nine degrees above normal for Srinagar, a MeT official said.
Other parts of Jammu and Kashmir also witnessed unusual heat.
Qazigund recorded a maximum of 33.5 degrees Celsius, its third-highest May temperature since 1956. However, the highest-ever temperature for the town remains 34 degrees Celsius, recorded in May last year.
Kokernag registered 33.3 degrees Celsius today, becoming the hottest ever May day for the town since records began in 1978. This temperature surpasses the previous all-time record of 32.6 degrees Celsius, set on May 15, 2001.
The unprecedented heat in these areas underlines an unusual weather trend gripping the region this summer.
Jammu and Kashmir is presently witnessing intense heatwave while the administration and doctors have issued advisories, appealing people to take adequate precautions.
According to India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Srinagar centre Kashmir is likely to witness generally hot and dry weather from May 22 to 26.
“From May 27 to 31, hot and dry conditions are expected to continue, accompanied by scattered to widespread thundershowers,” it said.
