Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) has strongly refuted claims made in a recent newspaper article dated July 28, 2025, regarding the Jhelum Riverfront Development Project. Calling the article “factually inaccurate” and “unbalanced,” SSCL issued a detailed statement highlighting the project’s significant public benefits and progress under the Smart Cities Mission.
According to SSCL, the Left Bank stretch from Zero Bridge to Amira Kadal (2.5 km) has been fully completed and inaugurated by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor on May 20, 2023. This stretch has been transformed into a vibrant pedestrian promenade with green spaces, street lighting, modern toilets, universal accessibility, and heritage ghat upgrades.
SSCL emphasized that the area, once inaccessible and fenced, now sees robust public engagement, especially among the elderly and people with disabilities.
On the Right Bank, the completed 800-meter stretch from Heritage Zero Bridge to GPO was inaugurated on November 1, 2023. Upgrades include new pedestrian access routes, a large parking area under Abdullah Bridge, and improved sanitation facilities. The remaining stretch towards Amira Kadal is nearing completion with landscaping, seating, illumination, and kiosk installations underway.
SSCL reaffirmed that the Jhelum Riverfront Project was executed with a focus on ecological sensitivity, inclusivity, and cultural preservation, converting neglected riverbanks into accessible, safe, and lively public spaces.
The agency said the article failed to reflect these on-ground realities and misrepresented a project that has enhanced Srinagar’s urban landscape and quality of life.
