SSM College, IEI observe World Environment Day

The Jammu and Kashmir Centre of Institution of Engineers, India (IEI) in collaboration with SSM College of Engineering on Saturday observed the World Environment Day.
Chairman Pollution Control Board (PCB) Ravi Kumar Kesar inaugurated the event, titled 'Air Pollution'. Chief Conservator Forests Syed Farooq Gillani, Vice Chairperson SSM College of Engineering Dilafroze Qazi were the Guest of Honor on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Kesar congratulated the organizers for organizing such an event which creates awareness among the mass about the importance of the environment.
Attributing air pollution as a global problem, Kesar urged the youth to inculcate the concept of co-existence with nature and act as agents of change to bring about positive change in the environment.
In his welcome address, Chairman IEI Amir Ali said that IEI is a national organization of over ten lakh engineers that provides technological and scientific solutions to day to day challenge.
He said that massive industrialization is the main factor contributing to air pollution. Cerement factories, stone crushers and brick killen pose a major threat to the fragile environment.
He added that unscientific disposal of garbage in landfills and its burning release harmful gases, which pose a serious environmental threat and health hazards.
Executive Committee and Corporate Members of IEI, students and staff members from SSM College of Engineering, NIT Srinagar, Polytechnics, representatives from Civil Society, environmental experts, SDRF, NDRF, Civil Defense, Disaster Management Professionals and representatives of various NGOs working on preserving the environment were also present on the occasion.
Mementoes were also distributed among the guests and speakers and a short film titled 'Don't Burn Leaves' was also screened.
