Baramulla, April 21: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic Rural Kashmir, Liaqat Ali, carried out a comprehensive review of the traffic situation in Baramulla during his maiden visit to the district. The inspection focused on easing congestion, streamlining traffic flow, and ensuring road safety for commuters.
During his interaction with Brighter Kashmir, Liaqat Ali made it clear that the traffic department will adopt a “zero tolerance” policy against violations. He cautioned that strict legal action will be taken against parents who permit their underage children to drive, as well as against stunt riders and other reckless motorists. “We will not allow anyone to put lives at risk. Law will take its course against those who flout traffic rules,” he asserted.
Baramulla, one of the busiest towns in north Kashmir, has long struggled with traffic congestion due to narrow roads, increasing vehicle numbers, and unregulated parking. The SSP’s review included key choke points in the town where traffic snarls are most frequent. Officials discussed measures such as stricter enforcement of parking rules, deployment of additional personnel at busy intersections, and awareness campaigns to encourage responsible driving.
Liaqat Ali emphasized that road safety is not just the responsibility of the police but requires cooperation from the public. He urged citizens to follow traffic rules, avoid rash driving, and discourage minors from taking the wheel. “Parents must understand that allowing minors to drive is not only illegal but also dangerous. We will hold them accountable,” he said.
Local residents welcomed the SSP’s initiative, noting that traffic mismanagement has been a persistent issue in Baramulla. Shopkeepers and commuters expressed hope that stricter enforcement would reduce congestion and accidents. “If rules are implemented firmly, Baramulla can see smoother traffic movement,” said one resident.
The SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir assured that his department will continue to monitor the situation closely and introduce reforms where necessary. He highlighted that awareness drives, combined with strict enforcement, will be key to improving traffic discipline. “Our aim is to make roads safer for everyone. Cooperation between police and the public is essential to achieve this,” he concluded.
