Senior Superintendent of Police Traffic, Srinagar City, Ajaz Ahmed, on Tuesday issued a stern warning to car dealers and shopkeepers, stating that city roads cannot be used for business activities or long-duration parking.
Speaking to reporters, the SSP said several car dealers were illegally displaying vehicles on roads across Srinagar, leading to traffic congestion and inconvenience to commuters. He warned that all such vehicles would be lifted and strict legal action would follow. “Roads are meant for the smooth movement of traffic, not for running businesses,” he said.
The SSP also cautioned shopkeepers, especially in city centre areas, against parking their vehicles outside shops for the entire day. He said shopkeepers must use designated parking spaces or public transport and should not occupy road space. “Parking vehicles outside shops for long hours will not be tolerated,” he added.
Clarifying the distinction between shopkeepers and customers, the SSP said shoppers are allowed brief stops to make purchases, but shopkeepers are not permitted to block roads or footpaths through prolonged parking.
Addressing concerns about traffic challans, the SSP clarified that challans are not issued solely on the basis of mobile phone photographs. He said a proper procedure is followed, and in most cases, paper challans are issued on the spot.
He urged the public to cooperate with traffic authorities, stating that strict enforcement will continue to ensure discipline and smooth traffic flow across Srinagar city.
