Srinagar, April 20 : Residents of Natipora area in Srinagar are grappling with a growing stray dog menace, raising concerns over public safety and hygiene. Locals say the number of stray dogs has increased significantly over the past few months, leading to frequent incidents of dog bites and constant fear among children and elderly people.

According to residents, packs of dogs roam freely in lanes and marketplaces, especially during early morning and late evening hours. Many commuters, including school-going children, have reported being chased or attacked, forcing families to remain cautious while stepping out.
“We cannot allow our children to play outside freely anymore. The dogs become aggressive without any provocation,” said a local resident, adding that repeated complaints to the authorities have yielded little response.
Shopkeepers in the area have also expressed concern, stating that the presence of stray dogs is affecting business. “Customers hesitate to visit, especially in the evening. It has become a serious issue,” said another resident.
Locals have urged the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to take immediate steps to address the problem, including sterilisation drives and relocation of aggressive dogs. They also stressed the need for proper waste management, as open garbage dumps are attracting stray animals into residential areas.
Health experts warn that the rising dog population could pose risks of rabies and other infections if not controlled in time. They emphasize the importance of vaccination and population control measures.
Residents have appealed to the administration for urgent intervention, stating that the situation is becoming increasingly unmanageable. They hope that authorities will take swift action to ensure safety and restore a sense of normalcy in the locality.
