Srinagar, Jan 23: Strong winds that swept across Jammu and Kashmir since Thursday evening caused fresh damage in Srinagar on Friday early morning after the rooftop of a gym was blown off in the Mehjoor Nagar area, leading to the temporary shutdown of a busy road, officials and locals said.
According to locals, powerful gusts tore apart the rooftop structure of the gym, causing sheets and debris to fall onto the road below. The incident resulted in the disruption of vehicular movement in the area, with commuters forced to halt or take alternative routes.
No injuries were reported in the incident, though the sudden collapse of the rooftop triggered panic among locals present at the time.
The Mehjoor Nagar incident is part of a wider trail of destruction caused by unusually strong winds across the Valley. In almost every locality, shop signboards were damaged, while tin-shed fencing and temporary structures of several houses were either partially damaged or completely uprooted. Uprooted trees, fallen branches and loose metal sheets were reported from multiple areas, adding to the risk for commuters.
The windstorm also led to widespread disruption of electricity supply, with several feeders developing faults after trees and metal structures fell on power lines. Restoration work is underway, though officials said continued gusty conditions have slowed down repairs in some areas.
