Strong winds disrupt air traffic at Srinagar airport: 19 flights cancelled

March 29, 2025 | BK News Service

At least 19 flights were cancelled at Srinagar Airport on Friday due to strong winds triggered by a steep pressure gradient.
Airport authorities said that a steep pressure gradient, a weather-related issue, caused wind speeds to reach 17 knots, with gusts of up to 27 knots. As a result, Srinagar Airport was able to accommodate only 11 arrivals and 11 departures between 6:30 a.m. and 4:50 p.m.
At the end of the day, the adverse weather conditions led to the cancellation of 19 flights, while several others faced significant delays.
Strong winds across various parts of valley since Thursday evening have caused substantial damage to multiple properties and infrastructure.
The severe storm with heavy winds struck various areas including Srinagar overnight, causing significant damage to tin sheds and uprooting trees, blocking roads.
The strong winds led to complete destruction of a vehicle near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) Srinagar.
Witnesses reported the vehicles were severely damaged as debris fall on them due to the storm. Also, several electric cables were snapped, raising concerns over power disruptions.
In the Habbak area of Srinagar, a rooftop collapsed because of high-tension (HT) power lines falling on it. However, there were no injuries or loss of life in the incident.
The electricity supply was affected in many areas of Srinagar and other parts of the Valley during the night.
