“Teachers’ Day Reflections

September 08, 2025 | Dr. Aasif Ahmad

“Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.” – Malala Yousafzai

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” – Albert Einstein
“A good teacher is like a candle—it consumes itself to light the way for others.” – Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
On this Teachers’ Day, schools, colleges, and universities across the valley resonated with zeal and enthusiasm as students expressed love, gratitude, and respect for their mentors. The day served not only as a reminder of the bond between teacher and student but also as an occasion to reflect upon the lifelong impact a teacher leaves on the minds and hearts of learners.
As a teacher who has been in this noble profession since 2013, I feel deeply honored and humbled to be remembered by my students on this special day. Many of my taught are now serving in different walks of life—some in the medical and health departments, some in defense, while others contribute to various civil services. Many are still pursuing their studies in reputed universities, aspiring to achieve greater heights.
Over the years, my journey has been enriched with invaluable experiences, both from my seniors and from the privilege of practically guiding students in the classroom. A student’s nature, I believe, is flexible and impressionable. Whatever guidance a teacher offers within the institution, the student accepts it with immense faith. As Aristotle once said, “Those who educate children well are more to be honored than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well.” This is why a teacher is not merely an instructor but a true Guru—one who, in many ways, extends the affection and love of parents.
I have always shared a deep bond with my students. Among them is one very special student, Saba Bhat, a resident of Tangmarg, whom I taught at GDC Magam two years ago. Today, she is pursuing her Master’s in Psychology at Kashmir University. To me, Saba is as close as a daughter at home. I have witnessed how sometimes a teacher’s presence means more than classroom instruction. Words of encouragement, timely advice, and sincere concern can nourish a student’s growth just as knowledge does. As William Arthur Ward beautifully remarked, “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” Seeing her continue her academic journey fills me with immense pride, as it does with all my students who are striving in higher institutions.
This day truly belongs to students, for only their respect and remembrance make it meaningful. On this occasion, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all my students, past and present, who took a moment to think of me. Dear students, thank you for remembering me on this beautiful day. You are always beside my heart and close to my soul. I wish you all success, good health, and fulfilling careers ahead.
Indeed, a teacher’s pride lies not in titles or accolades but in the shining achievements of his students. And as Henry Adams wisely observed, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops
