In societies worldwide, a troubling pattern persists when individuals strive for success, innovation, or personal growth, they are often met with resistance—not just from systemic barriers, but from their peers. This phenomenon, sometimes referred to as crab mentality—derived from the way crabs in a bucket pull each other down rather than allowing one to escape—reveals an inherent human struggle between individual aspiration and collective insecurity.

But why does this happen? What drives people to discourage, mock, or obstruct those who seek progress? And more importantly, how can we counteract this tendency to create a culture of support and encouragement instead?

The Psychology of Pulling Others Down

At its core, the tendency to undermine others stems from a mix of psychological, social, and cultural factors:

Envy and Insecurity
