The Taste of Words

July 18, 2026 | Yousuf Mir

Words are among the most powerful forces in human life. They can inspire hope, heal emotional wounds, strengthen relationships, or leave scars that last for years. Their true strength does not lie in eloquence or complexity but in the sincerity with which they are spoken. A sincere word reaches where wealth, authority, and even physical strength often cannot—the human heart.

This timeless truth became clear during a conversation between two friends, Sahil and Tahir. One afternoon, Sahil visited Tahir at his shop. As they exchanged greetings and spoke about family and their mutual friend living abroad, the discussion gradually turned towards a deeper subject.
Tahir remarked that whether a person is considered good or bad often depends on time, for time itself passes the final judgment. Curious, Sahil asked for an explanation.
To illustrate his point, Tahir referred to the well-known saying, "The pen is mightier than the sword." There was once a time when the sword symbolised power and kingdoms were built through force. As civilisation evolved, the symbols of power changed, but the influence of words remained constant. Technologies may replace weapons, but nothing can replace the enduring power of language.
When Sahil asked what gives words such remarkable power, Tahir replied with a thought-provoking answer: their taste.
He explained that the "taste" of words is sincerity. Words spoken from the heart possess a unique ability to touch another person's soul. However, sincerity alone is not enough. It must be accompanied by courage. Sincerity without courage lacks strength, while courage without sincerity loses its moral value. Together, they form the foundation of meaningful communication.
To reinforce this lesson, Tahir narrated the story of a renowned Hakim believed to heal people through words. A sceptical visitor decided to test this extraordinary claim.
When the visitor entered the Hakim's chamber, he was unexpectedly greeted with harsh and insulting words. Within moments, anger overtook him, and his blood pressure rose significantly. The Hakim calmly measured it and confirmed the increase.
Then everything changed.
The Hakim softened his voice, sincerely apologised for his behaviour, and spoke with warmth and compassion. Gradually, the visitor's anger disappeared, his mind became peaceful, and when the Hakim measured his blood pressure again, it had returned to normal.
Smiling gently, the Hakim explained that harsh words had disturbed the visitor's body, while kind and sincere words had restored both his peace of mind and physical balance. The demonstration proved that words are not merely sounds; they possess the power to influence emotions, health, and human relationships. They can become medicine when spoken with wisdom or poison when used carelessly.
The story left a lasting impression on Sahil. He realised that the true strength of language lies not in impressive vocabulary or persuasive arguments but in the sincerity behind every word. Words become meaningful only when they reflect honesty, compassion, and genuine concern for others.
In today's fast-paced world, where conversations often occur through screens and social media, people sometimes forget that every word carries emotional weight. A thoughtful sentence can encourage someone to continue despite difficulties, while a careless remark can cause lasting pain. The responsibility of choosing words wisely has therefore become greater than ever.
Ultimately, the real power of words is not measured by how loudly they are spoken but by how deeply they are felt. Sincere words build trust, strengthen relationships, resolve conflicts, and bring healing where silence or force cannot.
Indeed, sincerity is the true taste of words, and words spoken with sincerity possess the extraordinary power to transform hearts, minds, and lives.
