The True Spirit of Qurbani

May 19, 2026 | Feroz Ahmad Dar

Eid al-Adha is a powerful reminder of faith, obedience, humility, and selflessness rather than just a celebration of ceremonial sacrifice. As millions of people prepare animals for Qurbani, making sure they are flawless and healthy, a crucial question subtly emerges: Are we paying the same attention to our own behavior and character?
Eid-ul-Azha teachings extend well beyond animal slaughter. The sacrifice honors Prophet Ibrahim's steadfast devotion and selflessness, as he was prepared to give up his greatest love for God. Sincerity, purity of intention, and obedience were the essence of this act, not blood or show.
However, Qurbani is now frequently restricted to appearances by society. People talk about breeds and prices, display pricey animals with pride, and pay close attention to whether the animal is perfect. However, a lot of people ignore their own shortcomings, such as dishonesty, conceit, greed, injustice, hypocrisy, and cruelty to others.
Ironically, society frequently tolerates imperfect behavior from the person offering the sacrifice, despite Islam's requirement that the animal be be-aib (flawless). It is possible for someone to fulfill all of the animal's religious requirements while still lying, cheating, taking advantage of others, or ignoring the plight of the underprivileged. The genuine spirit of Eid-ul-Azha is weakened by such inconsistencies.
This holy occasion teaches us to sacrifice not just an animal but also our own negativity. Eid-ul-Azha teaches people to give up pride for sincerity, hatred for compassion, ego for humility, and selfishness for generosity. The true Qurbani starts when a person is prepared to change their character and purify their heart.
Perhaps the most poignant thought as families come together on this Eid and the sound of Takbeer fills the air is this: judge yourself before you judge the sacrifice. Because the sincerity and righteousness of the person offering it determine the value of Qurbani, rather than just the animal's perfection. Then and only then will Eid-ul-Azha be genuinely a celebration of humanity, faith, and spiritual development.
