Residents live in fear, urge police action
A rising wave of thefts in the Zalusa area of Chrar-e-Sharief has triggered panic among local residents, who say they are living in fear as thieves continue to strike with impunity. Locals allege that multiple incidents of burglary and attempted thefts made yet no concrete action has been taken to deter the culprits.
Residents report that unidentified miscreants have been targeting homes, particularly during the night, stealing valuables and cash. “We can’t sleep peacefully. Every night, someone’s house becomes a target. We are forced to stay awake in turns to guard our homes,” said Ghulam Mohammad, a resident of Zalusa.
Another local, Farooq Ahmad, said that the thieves appear to be well-organized and familiar with the area’s layout. “They move in groups, cut off electricity at times, and enter homes stealthily. People are terrified. We’ve formed local vigil groups, but we can only do so much,” he added.
So far, several complaints have reportedly been filed with the local police station, but residents allege that visible patrolling or preventive measures are lacking. “There is a dire need for regular night patrols and the installation of streetlights in the dark stretches of the area,” said a local sarpanch, urging the police to intervene before the situation worsens.
Community leaders have now called upon senior police officials to take urgent steps, including deploying mobile units, increasing night patrols, and launching a thorough investigation to nab those involved.
The growing insecurity has also sparked concern among elders and parents, who fear for the safety of their children and elderly family members. “We appeal to the SSP Budgam and local SHO to take this matter seriously and restore confidence among the residents,” said a women’s group spokesperson from the area.
As of now, police have not issued an official statement, but sources say that the matter is being looked into and action may be taken in the coming days. Meanwhile, the people of Zalusa remain on edge, hoping for swift intervention before another home falls prey to this unsettling crime spree.
