Towards safer Kashmir

February 13, 2025 |

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have launched a SIM card verification drive across multiple districts, aiming to ensure that mobile connections are issued in compliance with established procedures. This initiative is a crucial step in the fight against terrorism, illegal activities, and anti-national elements operating in the valley. In recent years, unverified or fraudulently obtained SIM cards have become a tool for terrorists and their handlers to communicate, coordinate attacks, and evade security agencies. By tightening regulations and verifying mobile connections, authorities can significantly curb the misuse of communication networks for nefarious purposes. Terrorist organizations and their sympathizers have frequently exploited loopholes in mobile network security to further their objectives. Unregistered or illegally acquired SIM cards are often used to plan attacks, radicalize individuals, and spread propaganda without leaving a traceable footprint. Intelligence reports have repeatedly highlighted how militants use multiple SIM cards to stay ahead of law enforcement agencies, making it difficult to track their activities. Additionally, digital fraud, extortion, and cybercrimes have increased due to the availability of SIM cards obtained through forged documents. In Kashmir, as security concerns remain high, unregulated mobile connectivity poses a grave threat. Terrorists operating from across the border rely on local networks to establish contact with their operatives, transfer funds, and execute attacks. Many times, SIM cards acquired in one region are used in another, making it harder for authorities to trace the perpetrators. A strict verification drive ensures that only legitimate users have access to mobile networks, significantly reducing this risk. The drive serves as a deterrent to those seeking to use fraudulent means to obtain mobile connections. By enforcing stringent Know Your Customer (KYC) norms, security agencies can maintain a database of verified users, making it easier to identify and apprehend suspicious individuals. This also prevents telecom retailers from engaging in illegal sales of pre-activated SIM cards, which have often found their way into the hands of anti-national elements. Moreover, enhanced verification measures will support counter-terrorism efforts by allowing authorities to track suspicious calls, intercept radical messaging, and disrupt communication channels used by extremist groups. It also complements broader efforts to modernize intelligence gathering, integrate AI-based surveillance, and establish a robust cyber-monitoring framework to detect threats before they materialize. While some may view the verification drive as an inconvenience, its larger goal is to create a safer environment for civilians and security forces alike. Ensuring that every SIM card is linked to a verifiable identity is a necessary step toward stability. A strong digital security framework, backed by stringent verification processes, will not only help curb terrorism but also restore confidence in law enforcement efforts to maintain peace in Kashmir.
