Srinagar, Sep 2: Traffic movement across parts of Downtown Srinagar has shown improvement over the past year following the introduction of one-way systems, junction remodelling, stricter enforcement and restrictions on certain categories of vehicles.

The measures have been particularly noticeable along congested stretches of Shehr-e-Khas, where narrow roads, heavy pedestrian movement, commercial activity and roadside encroachments have traditionally contributed to traffic bottlenecks.

The traffic arrangements have been implemented under the supervision of SSP Traffic City Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, with DySP Traffic Mehboob-ul-Haq involved in their execution and ground-level management.

The Rajouri Kadal-Gojwara stretch was designated for one-way movement of public transport, while traffic on the narrow Barbar Shah bridge was also regulated in one direction. Barricading and junction modifications were introduced at several identified choke points, including Chhati Padshahi and Kanyar.

Restrictions on the movement of e-rickshaws along MA Road and Residency Road were also introduced as part of efforts to reduce mixed traffic on already congested corridors.

Enforcement has been strengthened alongside the new arrangements. Traffic records indicate that challan disposal increased from 30 percent in 2024 to 56 percent in 2025. Authorities have also intensified efforts to clear road obstructions and prevent vehicles from occupying pedestrian pathways.

Several road-related works have accompanied the traffic measures, including resurfacing, drainage improvements and junction modifications. These efforts have involved coordination between the Traffic Department and the civil administration.

Despite the improvements, Srinagar continues to face broader traffic challenges. Rising vehicle numbers, narrow roads, roadside commercial activity, limited parking and heavy pedestrian movement continue to place pressure on the city's transport network.

The experience in Downtown has, however, given traffic authorities an opportunity to assess whether targeted interventions such as one-way systems, junction redesign and stronger enforcement can be applied to other congested areas.

Similar arrangements are being considered for interior routes in Lal Chowk, Batamaloo and the Safa Kadal-Cement Kadal corridor. Consultations with traders, transport operators and other stakeholders are expected to remain important before introducing further restrictions.

Authorities now face the challenge of ensuring that traffic diversions are supported by adequate parking, public transport and road infrastructure. Without such measures, congestion could simply shift from one locality to another.
