
Srinagar, August 13: Police have arrested two men in Anantnag district for allegedly extorting ₹24,000 from a local resident after threatening to implicate him in a false narcotics case.
According to police, Police Station Srigufwara received a complaint from Ajaz Ahmad Shah, son of Mohd Maqbool and a resident of Pethi Nambal Mattan. The complainant alleged that the accused had taken ₹24,000 from him and threatened to involve him in an NDPS case if he failed to make further payments.
Police said verification of the complaint found that the victim had no involvement in any narcotics-related case. Following the verification, FIR No. 68/2026 was registered at Police Station Srigufwara under Sections 308(2)(6), 318(4) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
During the investigation, police identified and arrested the two accused as Muzafar Ahmad Mir, son of Ghulam Mohd Mir, a resident of Veer Nowbugh, Bijbehara, and Jan Mohd Wagay, son of Gh. Rasool, a resident of Pethi Nambal Mattan.
Police said the action demonstrates their efforts to prevent intimidation, extortion and the misuse of criminal threats against members of the public.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
