Workers Mental and Health Concerns

Workers experience stress when the overall demands of their job are excessive and greater than their capacity to cope with them

March 19, 2024 | Mohd Ishaq Shah

Human being is a compound of both biological and psychological instincts. And they play a vital role in the daily life discourse of an employee and an employer working in any organization and department. And the tendency of human behavior being that it shows its inclination towards the abstract inferiority and superiority complexes. Employees are of two categories that is subordinate employees and authoritative ones. Those who are in power show their tendency towards superiority and those who are subordinates show their tendency towards inferiority. Yet there are some who make a midway and succeed in managing their survival in an organization and they are the employees holding the seats in the offices of any department /organization/ Institute/ college/university etc.While as majority fail to overcome the difficulties faced while serving an office and a set up.

The main concern in this regard is that of the stress experienced by a worker. And at the same time having to perform up to the mark in an organization and has to maintain the balance between the requited working standard of the company and his personal psycho-biological requirements which however is very difficult for an average level worker and the result being that the said employee unconsciously consumes a poison that makes his life boring, dull, listless and ultimately takes it away from him. A survey report published by SOH-Occupational Safety and Health at Work is quoted here for the sake of reference.
“Psycho social risks and resulting consequences for mental and physical health are among the most challenging issues in occupational safety and health (OSH). Besides their detrimental effect on individual health, psycho social risks can also negatively impact the efficiency of organizations as well as national economies.
Stress, anxiety and depression make up the second most common work-related health problem affecting European workers. Raising mental health aspects and mentioning challenges in the workplace is still attached to the fear of stigma. Nevertheless, the proportion of workers who report facing risk factors that can adversely affect their mental health is nearly 45%. However, when viewed as an organizational issue rather than an individual fault, psycho social risks can be tackled in the same structured and organized way as other OSH risks.
Psycho social risks arise from poor work design, organization and management, as well as from poor social context of work, and they may result in negative psychological, physical and social outcomes. Some examples of working conditions leading to psycho social risks are:
Excessive workloads;
Conflicting demands and lack of role clarity;
Lack of involvement in making decisions that affect the worker;
Lack of influence over the way the job is done;
Poorly managed organizational change;
Job insecurity;
Ineffective communication;
Lack of support from management or colleagues;
Psychological and sexual harassment; and
Difficult customers, patients, pupils, etc.

When considering the job demands, it is important not to confuse psycho social risk factors such as excessive workload with conditions where, although work tasks are stimulating and sometimes challenging, there is a supportive work environment in which workers have enough autonomy and they are well trained and motivated to perform to the best of their ability. A good psycho social environment enhances good performance and personal development as well as workers’ mental and physical well being.
Workers experience stress when the overall demands of their job are excessive and greater than their capacity to cope with them. In addition to associated mental health problems such as burnout, anxiety, depression and even suicidal intentions, workers suffering from prolonged stress can go on to develop serious physical health problems such as cardiovascular disease or musculoskeletal disorders.
For the organization, the negative effects include poor overall business performance, increased absenteeism and presenteeism (workers turning up for work when sick and unable to function effectively), and higher turnover as well as increased accident and injury rates. Absences related to mental health tend to be longer than those arising from other causes and work-related risk factors are an important element contributing to increased rates of early retirement. Estimates of the cost to businesses and society are significant and run into billions of euro at a national level.” –OSH
So in such a world where 80% people earn their livelihood either by working at Public/Private sector or doing manual work under landlords or firm holders how a worker can survive and overcome his mental stress and go ahead with his job is what we must cover here. Jack Finney -An American short Story writer ,has given the best analysis of human psychological discourse in famous short story named as Third Level wherein the main character Charley finds a third level at Grand Central station In Newyork city while going to home hurriedly and getting lost in the past (1894) and tries to book two tickets for Illions, Newyork-USA ,but is petrified when the clerk refuses to accept his currency notes and tells him that he is trying to cheat him. Although ,his friend and psychiatrist Sam doesn’t initially agree with him and calls it day dreaming on his part, but later on it is revealed from the letter that Sam himself has been to third level. And technically the third level is what we say in figurative language Stream Of Consciousness and the way proposed by the writer is to indulge in the hobbies like stamp collecting, gardening, watering flowers so as to channelize our mental energy especially in the current world that is full of war, worry, fear and tension.
So, I would like to put forth some modest proposals here under:A worker /employee must understand his job profile and study about the organization he/she is working with. He must know his character and role in that system and carry on only with it. He/she must not intervene in the matters beyond his scope and mandate. The workers must engage themselves with indoor games when free from the work and they must indulged in exercise e like morning/evening walk and involve himself with reading books like novels .science fiction, detective stories and other health related literature.
