Will meet LG Sinha, CM Omar
Srinagar, Aug 18: United States Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, will arrive in Kashmir on Wednesday on his first visit to the union Territory since assuming office earlier this year.
Official sources said the Ambassador is scheduled to land in Srinagar on Wednesday afternoon and is expected to meet Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during his stay.
Gor will spend the night in Srinagar before leaving for Ladakh on Thursday, sources added.
The visit marks Gor's maiden trip to Jammu and Kashmir after formally taking charge as the 27th US Ambassador to India on January 14 this year.
While the Ambassador's official itinerary includes meetings with the union Territory's top leadership, it remains unclear whether he will also interact with political leaders, representatives from business, civil society and the security establishment during his visit.
The trip assumes significance as it takes place in a changed political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir following the 2019 constitutional changes and the subsequent restoration of an elected government in the union Territory.
