Bandipora, Mar 7: In an inspiring tale of perseverance, Irfan Ahmad Lone, a visually impaired youth from Naidkhai village in Bandipora’s Sonawari area, has cleared the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination, securing an All India Rank (AIR) 957. His remarkable achievement has brought pride to his family and the entire district.
Irfan, son of Bashir Ahmad Lone, a casual labourer, overcame severe financial and physical challenges to reach this milestone. After losing vision in one eye during childhood due to a pencil accident, his remaining eyesight gradually deteriorated, leaving him completely visually impaired. Recognizing the need for specialised education, his father enrolled him at the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities in Dehradun, where Irfan completed his schooling up to Class 12.
Despite limited resources—his father once earned only ₹3,000 per month, later raised to ₹9,000—he remained steadfast in supporting Irfan’s education. Irfan went on to pursue higher studies at Hindu College, University of Delhi, and completed his postgraduation at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Though offered a PhD opportunity at the University of Oxford, he chose to focus on competitive examinations.
Currently, Irfan works as an Assistant Administrative Officer at the Life Insurance Corporation of India in Delhi. His achievement has sparked celebrations in Naidkhai, with hundreds visiting his home to congratulate the family. Relatives and locals lauded his determination, highlighting that his journey proves no challenge is insurmountable.
Former minister Naeem Akhtar also congratulated Irfan and his family, calling his success a source of inspiration for the youth of the region.
Irfan Ahmad Lone’s story stands as a powerful example of resilience, hard work, and the transformative impact of education, inspiring countless others to pursue their dreams despite obstacles.
