Waterlogging makes commute tough in Srinagar

October 07, 2025 | Shugufta Rashid

Heavy rains and poor drainage in parts of Srinagar have caused severe waterlogging, creating significant difficulties for daily commuters across the city. Low-lying areas, particularly around Lal Chowk, Rajbagh, and Maisuma, witnessed streets submerged in knee-deep water, disrupting traffic and public transport services.

Commuters faced long delays as vehicles struggled through the waterlogged roads, while pedestrians waded through flooded streets to reach their destinations. Local residents complained that water stagnation not only hampers mobility but also poses health risks, with the potential spread of waterborne diseases.
Traffic police were deployed to manage the jammed streets and divert vehicles to alternate routes, but the situation remained challenging during peak hours. Auto-rickshaw and taxi services were reported to be operating at limited capacity, further inconveniencing residents.
Several citizens urged the municipal authorities to take immediate action, including clearing clogged drains and ensuring proper water management during rains, to prevent recurrent flooding. Officials from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) acknowledged the issue and assured that measures are being taken to decongest waterlogged areas and improve drainage systems ahead of the peak rainy season.
The waterlogging comes at a time when the city is already dealing with infrastructural challenges, raising concerns over preparedness for heavy rainfall and urban flooding in the future.
