As examination dates draw near, a familiar scene unfolds across our towns and campuses. Students, once carefree and relaxed, suddenly appear tense, anxious, and frustrated. Bookshops overflow with last-minute visitors searching desperately for “ready-made notes,” guides, and shortcuts to success. This rush itself is a silent humiliation for the student community...a reminder of time lost and opportunities missed.
One question repeatedly troubles a teacher’s mind: when schools and colleges are equipped with qualified staff, and when the government pays a handsome salary to mentors for academic guidance, why do students fail to utilise this invaluable resource in time? Why are teachers remembered only when examinations knock at the door?
From a teacher’s close observation, the pattern is clear. During the regular classwork season, many students spend their precious hours in playgrounds, parks, corridors, and on mobile phones. Teachers urge them to attend classes, warning them about attendance shortages and academic gaps. Yet, confident in their understanding of “the system,” students often ignore this advice, preferring momentary pleasure over long-term preparation.
Ironically, the same exam that suddenly steals their happiness is treated like a joke throughout the year. Students appear worried and relaxed at the same time...an unusual blend of fear and false confidence. If not for this single word, EXAM, many might never become cautious at all. Perhaps examinations, despite all criticism, serve one essential purpose: they awaken sleeping minds.
However, it is important to acknowledge that this picture does not represent everyone. There exists a group of students, few in number but rich in discipline..who remain curious from the very beginning. Their attendance is regular, their classroom discussions lively, and their notebooks complete. For them, examinations are not a nightmare but a long-awaited opportunity. Naturally, they perform well, not by miracle, but by method.
Through this article, I wish to offer sincere advice to all students: do not centre your entire concentration on the examination date. Education is not a seasonal activity. Attend your classes regularly. Stay connected with your teachers. Listen, question, and make notes during lectures. Classroom learning is the strongest foundation you can build.
When learning becomes a daily habit rather than a last-minute struggle, examinations lose their power to frighten. Success then follows naturally, not as a surprise, but as a well-earned reward.
