World Press Freedom Day: Pulwama observes two-minute silence for Pahalgam killings

May 04, 2025 | BK News Service

A solemn two-minute silence was observed in Pulwama today in memory of the victims of the recent Pahalgam killings, marking a poignant start to the World Press Freedom Day ceremony held in the town. The event, organized by Jurnalist Gild of Pulwama civil Kamran health society, brought together journalists, activists, and citizens to pay homage to the lives lost and to highlight the importance of press freedom in conflict zones.
The gathering was held at the Town Hall, where emotional tributes were paid to the deceased. Participants lit candles and held placards bearing messages of peace and justice, underscoring the continuing challenges faced by both civilians and media personnel in Kashmir.
The highlight of the event was the felicitation ceremony, where veteran journalist Mushtaq ul Islam was honored for his decades of fearless reporting in the region. Several other journalists were also recognized for their dedication and commitment to ethical journalism, often in the face of great personal risk.
Speakers at the event emphasized the role of the free press as a cornerstone of democracy and called for greater protection for journalists working in volatile areas. “Truth must never be silenced, even in the darkest times,” said Mushtaq ul Islam in his address, receiving a standing ovation from attendees.
The ceremony concluded with a pledge to uphold press freedom and continue reporting with integrity, despite mounting challenges. The event served as both a tribute and a powerful reminder of the indispensable role journalists play in society.
