Night temp improves in Kashmir; Leh freezes at minus 12 deg C

The night temperature has witnessed further improvement due to partial overcast conditions though the mercury settled below normal at majority of the places in Kashmir valley, where a weather warning has been issued from December 11.
Even though Leh in Ladakh region witnessed an improvement by about 2 degree from Wednesday in the
night temperature, it was still the coldest place in the region at minus 12 degree Celsius followed by
border town of Kargil at minus 7 degree C.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that weather will remain dry during the next 36 hours in the
state. However, he said a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), which originated from the Arabian sea and
is approaching the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is likely to hit the state on December 10.
“As the WD has moisture it would result in moderate to heavy snowfall in the state, which could
affect air and road connectivity of the valley with the rest of the country,” he said, adding night
temperature during this period will improve though day chill will intensify.
He said the skies will be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 8 and minus 12 degree, respectively.
The mercury at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, further surged and settled above normal. Against minus 3.8 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature at the ski resort was minus 2.5 degree.
The summer capital, Srinagar, also witnessed an improvement in the night temperature after the mercury surged and settled at minus 2.7 degree C, against minus 3.3 degree C recorded on Wednesday. The night temperature in Srinagar was still about 3 degree below normal. However, the maximum temperature in the summer capital was 4 degree above normal.
He said the skies will be mainly clear with haze during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 14 degree C and minus 4 degree C, respectively.
Tourist resort of Kukarnag was the only place in the valley where the night temperature was above sub-zero for the second successive day on Thursday. Against 0.7 degree C recorded on Wednesday, the night temperature at Kukernag was 1.3 degree C.
The night temperatures at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, Qazigund, gateway to the valley, and Kupwara in north Kashmir also surged and settled at minus 1.3 degree C, minus 1.4 degree C and minus 2.7 degree C respectively.
