Every day several kilos of polythene come into the Srinagar area, causing damage to the summer capital and the general environment. The government is finally going to tighten the screws on wholesale suppliers. The District Administration has asked and received a list of these suppliers and is determined to take action. The administration ruled on the issue, passing an order that banned all use of polythene in Srinagar earlier in response to concerns launched by the civil society members. The administration to create a task force consisting of officers from various departments to deal with pollution and sewage related problems.
The responsibility for carrying out this order was given to the District Administration, the police and municipal authorities. However the only action that has been taken until now has been periodic raids on small shopkeepers who use polythene bags to wrap their goods. The municipality, the Pollution Control Board and District Administration have planned several times to clamp down on wholesalers, but each time they have let them off.
There are approximately a dozen wholesalers Srinagar city that supply the entire district. The size of the polythene is also in flagrant violation of national Environment Ministry regulations. The Pollution Control Board PCB has asked for the list from the Local Intelligence Unit. It was said that a previous list was provided, but it was not taken very seriously. Now three different lists have been prepared and are being cross checked and then acted upon.
. Our environment including water bodies are on the verge of destruction only because of the polythene. The usage of the polythene bags in business hub is on rise. In Sunday market a huge of polythene nags were thrown on the roads by the traders and SMC employees were hardly seen anywhere. It is the high time to raise voice against polythene and keep the valley green and clean.
There seems no respite from polythene which is non-biodegradable and also pollutes the soil. People throw these bags in the open and in water bodies which pollutes water.
