To check pilferage and curb revenue loss, the Jammu and Kashmir administration will install nearly a million pre-paid smart electricity meters in urban and rural areas to curb transmission and distribution (T&D) losses.
After the abrogation of Article 370, the administration has decided to implement the project on a priority basis as the Union Power Ministry wants J&K to boost revenue collection and reduce T&D losses which are nearly 60 per cent, the highest in India.
Senior officials said the initial tendering process for 80,000 smart meters had been completed and in the coming months, about five lakh more smart meters would be procured. The rest half-a-million would be brought after the first phase is completed by the end of this year.
