Parenting: An Important Determinant of Child Development

September 10, 2020 | Tasaduq Maqbool Bhat/ Waseem Lone

Children fall in the vulnerable domain of our society. They are considered the most dependent and fragile constituents of a community. They can't fulfil their all basic needs, cannot take care of themselves and can't save themselves from natural calamities and catastrophes. They are prone to various hitches, diseases, disabilities, accidents and other setbacks which keep on posing threat to their holistic development. In order to ensure the holistic development of children, the role of family is utterly pivotal. Besides inheriting genetic traits, a child inherits numerous other things which are exceedingly significant for its well-being. Inevitably, a child inherits knowledge, beliefs, morals, customs and other elements which socialize him and become important determinants of his physical, social, mental and emotional development. How parents rare a child usually determines what he would achieve in his span. Hence, parents need to develop certain amount of comprehension about their responsibilities in the upbringing of their children. The need to feel loved and the need to be understood are two important emotional needs of children. They yearn for an unconditional love. Hence parents need to love their cherubs unconditionally. Well, what does unconditional love really mean? Let's Introspect and puzzle out if we really fathom what unconditional love means. It doesn't mean fulfilling the financial needs of children in jiffy or imparting them with ready-made solutions to the problems they encounter. Loving unconditionally doesn't mean bearing the tantrums of children and fulfilling their irrational demands and desires. Unconditional love does not mean merely satisfying the nutritional needs and bearing the expenses of children. What unconditional love means then, you may ask! Well, unconditional love in broader sense means:

To fulfill the psychological, social and emotional needs of children besides financial needs.
To endorse the future operators of society in weal and woe: Whenever a child fails to accomplish any task he gets brutally assailed in the current tech-savvy world. This careless attitude of parents shreds the lofty aims of children and proves noxious for their self-esteem.
To impart constructive criticism whenever necessary: Parents need to fathom the tactics of how to impart constructive criticism with the help of kind, meek and soft language. Constructive criticism inflates the baloon of confidence and imparts the recipient with novel flair and acumen to solve day to day problems.
To assist them in solving problems: Assistance doesn't mean providing ready-made solutions. Absolutely not. It means to impart social teaching and expose the cherubs to the experiences of real world. It means to help children generate solutions for the problems without snatching from them their dear independence.
To pacify them and make them feel comfortable: Well, vicissitudes in life are inevitable. At times, your child may fail to meet your lofty expectations for sure. Is it not absurdity to aggravate his pain when he needs your support, love and care. It is the responsibility of parents to make their children feel comfortable and boost their self-esteem in such bleak moments.
To avoid making irrational comparisons.
To assist them in making the important decisions of life.
Family is an important social institution for a child which nurtures him and gives him the sense of belonging and identity in the society. The family has very powerful effect on the developing child, impacting attitudes, beliefs, opportunities, habits, and personality traits. The family plays a critical role in determining who a child becomes and what he or she accomplishes. For a child with talent, the influence of the family can be the determining factor as to whether the ability is developed to a high level or not. We all know individuals who are very accomplished and successful despite less than advantageous family circumstances or even truly awful ones and similarly, individuals with seemingly loving and supportive families who do not live up to their potential. It is important to realize that it is not just the immediate family that influences the developing child. All families have histories represented by the past accomplishments of previous generations as well as values and messages that are passed down from one generation to the next. A family’s generational history and stability affects the way and the degree to which a family can assist in the development of the talents of children. History of involvement in a particular field also reflects collective family values that are passed on to younger generations by older family members. The families may also affect opportunities for talent development through the stability of generations and the accumulation of educational, social, and financial resources or assets. Parents with higher levels of education possess tacit knowledge about such things as educational and career paths that can be shared with children. Many other aspects of families can affect their ability to support a talented child. One of these is marginality or the degree to which the family is dissimilar or isolated from the social context in which it lives or resides, or the extent to which the family perceives itself outside the mainstream cultural group. Families may be marginal because of their race, ethnicity, and religion. Marginality can have negative effects on a child because society restricts upward social mobility and opportunities for some groups. It can also have the effect of freeing the family from feeling that they must adhere to societal conventions, particularly regarding traditional paths toward achievement that include long years of training and education. In a nutshell, characteristics of families such as marginality and generational history affect the degree to which the family is able to recognize and support the developments of talents in children. Identifying characteristics of families of children who are academically or creatively gifted is useful, but the more important question is how these attributes affect the individual to result in high achievement. What are the processes that occur within families that produce children who are motivated to achieve, goal-directed, confident, persistent, and willing to spend the countless hours studying and practicing skills needed for success in their talent field? Parents can clearly play a role in this by providing early exposure to the talent area, encourage and supervise practice and talent-developing activities at home, find appropriate teachers, and generally play a coordinating role so that the child can remain focused on learning and sustain the priority of striving for long-term goals over immediate enjoyment.
In the current dog-eat-dog world, parents compel their cherubs to run the rat-races. The hapless juveniles are programmed by their parents and hence end up becoming wimpish denizens of society. Modern parents scarcely support their buds in exploiting their acumen in a full swing. This probably is the triggering factor of juvenile delinquency. So to sum up, parents need to love, respect, care and endorse their children come shine or rain. Children are our dear assets and they are worthy of utmost care, respect, love and support. If we could handle them with kid gloves today, they can charge the air with gaiety, prosperity and lasting happiness tomorrow as Karl Meninger says, “What is done to children, they will do to the society.”
