Postal network at GPO Srinagar lying defunct, allege people

November 25, 2020 | BK News Service

The people who are visiting the General Post Office (GPO) in Srinagar are being forced to face hardships as according to them the postal network is almost lying defunct in the summer capital of the Union Territory.

Locals who are visiting the GPO office here said that only two operators have been made available to deal with the hundreds of visitors on a regular basis. “It is obvious that the two operators can never be able to tackle the huge rush of visitors and nobody is paying heed over it, thus leaving the people to lurch at large,” the locals said.
They added that besides the work at the Sub office of GPO at SR Gunj has been suspended due to the fault in the generator.
The locals further stated that the work is being suspended after 02:00 PM following which all the visitors are being asked to visit the office again tomorrow. “One fails to understand what is happening at GPO. The office was meant to help the people, but unfortunately, the authorities don’t pay heed over it and thus push the local populace to the wall,” Ali Muhammad, a local visitor said.
PRO of GPO Srinagar, Ajay Kumar termed the allegations as baseless, saying that adequate staff is available at GPO offices and there is no dearth of the employees.
He said that sometimes, the workload can be high, but there is no shortage of employees and the number of operators is not two only.
Asked about the suspension of work at Sub office SR Gunj, Kumar said the work is never being suspended, adding that it is true that the generator has developed some technical snag. “We have already formed a committee to procure new generators for 50 offices and would likely be procured soon,” he said—(KNO)
