Humanity is in the midst of its biggest crisis yet due to the novel coronavirus. A three micron thing (virus is not even a living thing) has brought the entire humanity on its knees. Our all scientific advancements and achievements, our nuclear weapons and submarines, our fighter jets and skyscrapers, our palatial houses and supermarkets, have all fallen flat in the face of the threat posed by COVID-19 . We don’t know how far reaching its consequences are going to be, how many people will die, how many will recover and how many wounds will be opened. What we know for sure is that the number of positive cases and those consumed by the virus is steadily growing. Amidst all the gloom, a positive news is emerging from Vietnam which has become the first country in the world to have been declared COVID-free by the World Health Organisation. But the situation is becoming worse and worse in other parts of the world. New York has officially crossed hundred thousand infected patients and over 1500 deaths while Italy recorded nearly 1000 death in a single day. Humanity seems to be helpless in the face of nature. But this threat is also giving us an opportunity to set our priorities rights, tear down the walls of hatred and make the world a truly prosperous place to live in. We have been fighting against each other for a long time. For the so called national interest, the developed world has been focussing all its capabilities and energies on making weapons and fighter jets. But look where they are now. United States of America, arguably the most powerful country in the world, is struggling to find enough masks to protect its citizens from the deadly virus. Now, with the crisis sparked by the coronavirus threatening to change the global order, the country’s funny leader, President Donald Trump, and the leader of China, Xi Jinping have been in touch with the later promising to exchange data on COVID with the US. This would have been impossible just few weeks back. Similarly, Cuba has been sending its doctors across the world, especially to the worst hit countries, to help in dealing with the epidemic. These gestures are what makes humans a superior race. In the din of economy and power politics, we have perhaps forgotten that we are humans first and so called superpowers later. Whenever we emerge from the prevailing crisis, and emerge we will, our relationship with each other should be determined by humanity, and not just geopolitics or economy!
