MeT forecasts rains, snowfall for 24 hours
Rains lashed Kashmir Valley on Thursday while the higher reaches received snowfall with the meteorological department forecasting that the wet weather will prevail till Saturday.
“The western disturbance has become active. There will be widespread rain across the Valley with higher reaches and even some plains likely to receive fresh snowfall in the coming 24 hours,” Sonam Lotus, the director of the Srinagar station of the Indian Meteorological Department said.
He said the higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Thursday while rains lashed plains. “There will be light to moderate snowfall in plains as well as moderate to heavy snowfall in higher reaches in next 24 hours,” he said.
Director Lotus said there will be improvement in the weather system from November 23 onwards as skies are likely to remain open. “There is likelihood of plenty of sunshine in coming week, if no fresh western disturbance hits the region,” he said.
The prevailing weather system has led to a further dip in the temperature in Kashmir. “According to the forecast, the day temperature will go down by some degrees while as the night temperature will also go up,” he added.
Meanwhile, the strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway was through amid the fresh snow and rainfall in Kashmir on Thursday. Officials said the vehicles from Srinagar-Jammu were being allowed to ply.
Pertinently, the highway remained closed for almost a week recently following the fresh landslides, triggered by the rains as well as snowfall, witnessed in the Valley in last week.
