Ramadan in the Midst of Pandemic

Ramadan is the time we search our souls and seek forgiveness for all our acts of oppression and exploitation

May 11, 2021 | Ulfat Riyaz

In the name of Allah who states “Ramadan is the month in which Quran was sent down, as a guide to mankind, and clear signs for guidance and judgment between right and wrong. Allah states “O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you so that you may learn self – restraint (taqwa) Q2:183. No doubt, the month is an opportunity from Allah for the Ummah to draw closer to Him. But there are very essential points for all believers to take note of. Whosoever wishes to benefit from the endless bounties of Allah of this month should guard his or her sayings and actions from deviation from the teachings of Islam.

Ramadan is a reminder from God that your acts, your deeds, your thoughts and your intentions – every single thing will be accounted for. Ramadan is the time we search our souls and seek forgiveness for all our acts of oppression and exploitation.
It is a time in which we hold our bodily compulsions and instincts under strict control, together with our thoughts and our mental states, our moods and desires. We submit ourselves and our nafs (spirit, inner self) and our accustomed patterns of life to a higher template, one that fosters a regiment of self-restraint within the body and mind and correspondingly seeks an intensification of the life of the spirit. The body is ordered to fast from what it needs, from what is normally allowed to it, from what it desires, from what it craves from what it may seek on a whim, and from what it habitually seeks from all that leads to an intensification of the activities of the nafs.
Whenever the Ramadan comes the prophet would deliver his popular khutbah on elucidating the virtues of Ramadan and the laid down conditions for whoever wishes to benefit from. Because fasting is not just to keep away from the physical needs of the body but as one fasts ,all parts of his or her body like the tongue, legs, eyes and hands must fast as well. It is by this only that one can attain the taqwa, the achievable ultimate goal for the fast. In the prophet’s sermon welcoming the Ramadan fast he said: O people! The month of Allah has approached you with His mercy and blessings. This is the month that is best of all months in the destination of Allah. Its days are the best of days; its nights are the best of nights; its hours are the best of hours. There is one night (Lailatul Qadr), in which the reward of righteous deed therein is multiplied to become as that performed in a thousand months.
We are provided the means by which to alter our reality, to shape what we ourselves are. By holding back the nafs from its activity and its sustenance, moments of stillness, of silence, are obtained moments in which self-perception sharpens and deepens and spirit awakens and the spiritual form with which God created man begins to unfold itself. The Quran was sent down for our guidance in a blessed night of Laylatul Qadr. "And what can convey to you what Laylatul Qadr is? The night is better than a thousand months." (Qur'an 97:2-3. Apart from this the study in U.S.A said that the mental focus achieved during Ramadan increases the level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which causes the body to produce more brain cells, thus improving brain function. It is said that observing Ramadan brings positive effect on lipid profile, which means there is a reduction of cholesterol in the blood. Low cholesterol increases cardiovascular health, greatly reducing the risk of suffering from heart disease, a heart attack or a stroke .By not eating throughout the day during Ramadan you will find that your metabolism becomes more efficient meaning the amount of nutrients you absorb from food improves.
The Covid 19 pandemic has taken toll on humanity at large. People of all backgrounds and walks of life. This encompasses faith communities’ worldwide. Especially Muslims of Kashmir. when it coincides with lockdowns and curfews from three years in a row. Following the abrogation of article 370.Ramadan is being marked differently. We have had to Fast in complete lockdown and under COVID -19 health restrictions . In a usual Ramadan month, the Masajid used to be packed with devotees and worshippers sharing smiles ,prayers, the special gatherings of Quran recititation ,community dinners all that but now, Being cut away from worship places and other spiritual things is heartbreaking and it is not easy task for anyone because Muslims worldwide did not want to miss out on this blessed Ramadan opportunity which is the highlight of our year. Earlier there were glimmers that Ramadan 2021 could feel less restricted than last years ,but a spike in coronavirus cases in several countries especially India has once again put curbs on the holly months’ signature feasts and lengthy prayers in mosques. Therefore Ramadan is challenging, as there are suspension of mosque congregations including (tarawih, itikaf) and daily prayers will be performed at home. Inspite of this our faith itself teaches us to care for the safety and security of one and all ,even if that means locking up your Masajid.
The pandemic has brought human arrogance to dust. From West to East and North to south the man has realized that with all our worldly strengths – we are finally fearful, battered &defenseless. This pandemic has exposed our oppressive relationships with our fellow human beings, and with the nature. we must seek and forge unity and ask Allah for his mercy and observe this blessed time with spiritual fervor .we are going through a rough phase we should pray and back each other up .
Let the month Ramadan be an opportunity to regain and recover our relationship with God and show our gratitude for another year . Let it be a month of service and compassion towards humanity who are engaged with the pandemic. Let our kindness begin from our families and extend to others .It is an opportunity to give helping hand to world irrespective of any race, caste and religion. Stand by the oppressed and by the exploited .Let us free our self from selfish being Let us serve humanity and set it free from the grudges and the rage. You need not to go Allah whole .Just go to him. Standing ,sitting or on your knees. Go to him broken .Go to him poor. Hand him your shattered heart .He will return it to you whole. So let us see this moon as a new start .For all of us a new chance to go with. To heal and rise.
