Rectifying Historical Blunder

May 07, 2024 |

In a recent statement, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) is an integral part of India's sovereign territory. Jaishankar's assertion not only echoes historical fact but also calls attention to the past inertia of Indian administrations in rectifying this glaring injustice. It's important to acknowledge and rectify this historical oversight for the sake of justice, security, and the preservation of India's territorial integrity. Since independence, Pakistan has maintained unlawful control over a significant portion of Kashmir, constituting PoK. This occupation not only defies international law but also infringes upon the rights and aspirations of the Kashmiri people. India's founding leaders, cognizant of PoK's rightful place within the Indian Union, tragically failed to pursue its liberation post-independence. This neglect allowed Pakistan to entrench its presence in the region, perpetuating a cycle of conflict and instability. The continued occupation of PoK serves as a constant threat to regional peace and stability. Pakistan's relentless support for cross-border terrorism and its unabated efforts to stoke separatist sentiments in Jammu and Kashmir are enabled by its control over PoK. India can significantly undermine Pakistan's ability to use this territory as a launchpad for anti-India activities by staking claim to it, thereby bolstering its national security and fostering a conducive environment for peace in the region. Besides, India's commitment to upholding the principles of justice and sovereignty necessitates the restoration of its territorial integrity. The people of PoK, denied their fundamental rights and subjected to Pakistan's oppressive rule, deserve the opportunity to be part of a democratic and inclusive India. By reclaiming PoK, India can fulfill its duty to protect the rights and aspirations of all its citizens, regardless of their geographical location. However, reclaiming PoK requires a multifaceted approach that combines diplomatic assertiveness with strategic foresight. India must leverage its diplomatic channels to garner international support for its rightful claim over PoK. By highlighting the legal and moral grounds of its case, New Delhi can build a compelling narrative that resonates with the global community's commitment to upholding territorial integrity and combating cross-border aggression. Simultaneously, India must bolster its military capabilities to deter any potential resistance from Pakistan. A robust defense posture sends a clear message that India is prepared to defend its territorial integrity against any threat or provocation. Additionally, investing in infrastructure development and socio-economic initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir and the broader region can help win the hearts and minds of the people, further delegitimizing Pakistan's narrative of separatism and fostering a sense of belonging to the Indian Union.
