Rhetoric in Political Rallies

December 02, 2021 |

As Kashmir is reeling under severe cold conditions with valley people preferring to stay indoors, the major political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have commenced their activities in Jammu region where the weather is pleasant for them to hold rallies there and they have been doing it relentlessly. It was Ghulam Nabi Azad, the former chief minister and senior Congress leader, who addressed spectacular rallies all over Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley with resounding response from the people out there. Sensing success in Jammu, Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti too joined the bandwagon by raising pitch and prose in Ramban where she again attempted to digress from her contribution as chief minister as did Omar Abdullah who in his typical rhetorical style attempted to befool gullible people of Chenab Valley by invoking the abrogation of Article 370 after three years saying that had National Conference been in power, it won’t have been revoked. There are serious posers on this statement from the very people who he was addressing as to why NC dumped its autonomy report when it had a majority in the state assembly. NC from the last 70 years is fooling people on this article as the only link between Kashmir and the Union of India. While the party never informed people of Jammu and Kashmir about its status in the Constitutional framework. Home Minister Amit Shah while moving the bill to revoke the Act affirmed that Article 370 was not permanent as was Article 371 for North Eastern states. NC MPs Hasnain Masoodi and Akbar Lone failed to contest this affirmation as did the Home Minister sarcastically tell Masoodi that being former judge who had written on this article and was in the knowhow about the Constitutional status should have come forward to debate with him on this matter which Masoodi giggled it out in Lok Sabha as watched by all everywhere as to where did NC MPs stand in terms of resenting the revocation. Similarly, Azad has been seeking immediate restoration of statehood and has come to terms with the reality of abrogation as is his party high command who have larger political stakes in the rest of the country even though NC is crying hoarse that it were Congress stalwarts who had pledged constitutional guarantee in this regard. Had NC leaders been serious about its status, they could have sought those renewed guarantees in 1975 when Sheikh Abdullah was appointed Chief Minister by replacing Mir Qasim who was Congress CM at that time. On one side Omar is shedding tears about abrogation while Farooq Abdullah is using the erstwhile flag on his vehicle in Parliament. These gimmicks are only to invite media and public attention to prove their credentials which stand grounded by such acts. There are numerous contradictions in their addresses and acts which people are well aware of as gimmicks and playing to the gallery at a time when there are no issues for them to highlight.
