Sarjan Barkati’s family stages protest against attack on his wife

The family of the Bagpiper of 2016 agitation in South Kashmir, Sarjan Barkati’s family staged a protest against the attack on his wife and demanded a probe into the incident and immediate release of Barkati.
According to Barkati’s wife, who was accompanied by her 8 year old son Azan Barkati, 11 year old daughter Sugra Barkati, and a large number of locals from Rebban area of Shopian district in South Kashmir, hometown of Barkati.
Giving details of the incidents to media, Barkati’s wife said that on 7th July at about 8.30 pm, a masked man attacked her and attempted to strangulate her on her gate, when she was returning after fetching milk from the neighbor’s house.
“The masked attacker pushed me on ground and then tried to strangulate me. On hearing my cry, my children, who were in the house and the neighbors got alerted and came to my rescue, forcing the attacker to flee in the darkness of night”, she said.
Barkati’s daughter Sugra said that there stand nearly 57 cases registered against Barkati and he has been slapped with the Public Safety Act (PSA) a number of times.
“Although the Court has so far quashed 48 FIRs against Barkati, he is slapped with another and thus blocking his release.
The family said that after the attack on his wife, Barkati’s are feeling insecure and demanded that either he should be released immediately or they should also be lodged with him in Mattan Jail, where he is presently lodged.
Barkati was arrested in 2016 for his role during the unrest, after he attracted huge crowds for protests, in South Kashmir, through his chants and unique way of sloganeering, booked under the Public Safety Act.
The family urged the incumbent government to release Barkati immediately as the family is suffering huge financial problems and other issues mainly education of the Barkati’s children.
