Senseless Killings

June 01, 2021 |

The brazen killing of two youngsters in south Kashmir on Saturday evening is yet another ugly reminder of the heavy cost of violence in the Valley which is being paid by common people. According to reports, three bike-borne assailants halted outside a grocery store in Jablipora village where they first shot Sanjeed Ahmad Parray, who lived barely 300 metres away. He was shot in the head, body and arms, resulting in on spot death. The assailants, who were wearing black outfits, then looked for their second target, Shahnawaz Ahmad Bhat, who was present inside the store. One of the assailants pulled him out and he too was shot multiple times. By the time the victims were taken to the hospital for treatment, they had succumbed. A joint team of the Army and police carried out searches in the village to nab the assailants who had apparently managed to escape from the area. Although “unknown gunmen” are reported to have carried out the attack, the police spokesperson has said the perpetrators of the attack are militants and they will be dealt with as per law. Regardless, this is not the first time that “unknown gunmen” have destroyed the lives of people for reasons best known to them. In the past three decades, Kashmir has registered hundreds of such cases in which the identity of the perpetrators behind the killing of innocent persons has remained anonymous and often mired in controversies. These “unknown gunmen” have destroyed hundreds of families. Often militants use the cover of “unknown gunmen” to settle political and sometimes personal scores too. But the involvement of the other side has also been alleged in some cases. In cases of the killing of two youngsters in Shopian, their families have feigned innocence and even neighbors have vouched for their innocence. It is critical for the security agencies to investigate the case thoroughly and reveal the facts that led to the senseless killing of the two youngsters. Their families are asking questions and they should be provided answers by revealing the names of the perpetrators.
