Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Day

Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness day is held annually on February 12. This day is an opportunity to raise awareness about sexual and reproductive health issues and to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Sexually transmitted infections continue to be one of the major concerns. Health awareness events create publicity for health issues and aims to improve the condition and help to save lives, sometimes these events encourage preventive action against conditions becoming more serious. Sex education is one the main component of Health promotion. This term is most commonly used to identify biologic Male and Female status.

Need for Sexual and Reproductive health education.
Adolescence is both a period of opportunity and threats. It is an episode of exploring new options and ideas as opportunity. Due to the lack of awareness and proper guidance on sexuality and reproductive health, adolescents are becoming more vulnerable of sexual exploitation, early unintended pregnancy and other health hazards; STDs & HIV/AIDS; this exertion as threats of adolescent.
Clients often hesitate to introduce the topic of sexual health with their primary health care providers. They may be too embarrassed or they may think that they shouldn’t have sexual problems in our liberated times. When the health care professionals don’t introduce the topic these individuals are unrecognized and unserved.
Adolescent girls don’t know how to maintain the hygiene during their normal cycles.
Many husbands blame their wives of giving birth only to girls instead of boys without knowing the logic behind it.
Some parents restrict girls at home for kitchen work and keeping them away from education till now.
Many young boys and girls don’t accept the changes occurring in their body after puberty and gets depressed.
Paudal .D.P,Paudal .L(JULY 2012) Conducted a cross-sectional study on awareness on reproductive and sexual health among adolescents in Nepal.The findings revealed that among 385 subjects ,The mean age of respondents was 17.7±0.86 years and majority (57.9%) of them was in grade XII. 73.2% had high level knowledge and 70.9% had good practice of RSH, 92.2% of participants had good knowledge on proper age of marriage and child birth. About 44.2 % discussed about the RSH issues with family members whereas a great majority (90.4 %) had discussion with their friends and peer groups. 82.85% had positive attitude towards the necessity to discuss RSH issues
Contents of sexual and reproductive health education
Information on the anatomy and physiology of reproduction.
Physical and emotional changes associated with puberty in particular but with all changes in general.
On behavior towards opposite gender, gender standards and moral codes.
People should be informed about the sexual problems, their solutions and therapy.
Girls as much as boys are in need of getting instructions, so that knowledge may drive out fear and make room for self-respect. Her first period (natural beauty) should never be allowed to catch a girl unaware.
Opportunity should be provided for boys and girls to play together to faster their understanding and appreciation of each other.
Parents should be well sure that their children are following the right tract and provide them mobile phones at right time right age, so that they can utilize them in a proper way.
Make awareness of AIDS and other STD’s.
Awareness and implementation of various programmes and schemes regarding reproductive health awareness at different levels, like schools, communities, Primary health centers,CHCs etc.
People should well aware regarding Adolescent –friendly Health services that includes the community –based interventions like peer education, Quarterly Adolescent Health Day, Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation program and Menstrual Hygiene Scheme and Adolescent Reproductive and sexual health (ARSH) clinics.
The ratio of STDS is growing rapidly but so does public apathy. On the eve of Sexual and Reproductive health awareness day, let us try to stop them one at a time.
