KVK Budgam observed Field Day for Brown Sarson (Shalimar Sarson: SS-2) at Gariend Khurd with farmers of the area. Inputs (Seed SS-2 and Vermi compost) was provided to 60 farmers covering an area of 20 ha.
Programme coordinator (KVK Budgam) informed that Shalimar Sarson-2 is well suited for valley conditions upto an altitude of 1800m amsl, matures in 215-220 days, and is moderately resistant to Alternaria Blight and white rust. Thus, the variety is perfect for rice-sarson cropping system. The SS-2 was introduced through CFLDs and Programmes into the District for enhancing farmers income. The yield potential of SS-2 is 17quintals per hectare with 42.5% oil content. Besides Gariend, the SS-2 production has been undertaken at other villages of District as well. Over the last three years, KVK Budgam has facilitated production of Oilseeds through FLDs and CFLDs of SS-2 for horizontal expansion over an area of 80 ha across the District.
Farmers present at the site expressed their satisfaction over the performance of the crop and were thankful to the Kendra for providing improved varieties to the region. A progressive farmer, Mohammad Sultan, said, “We used to grow traditional variety of Sarson in our fields at Gariend. But the introduction of Shalimar Sarson-2 has brought remarkable results in yield.”
