Spurt in encounters since Indo-Pak ceasefire: Report

March 30, 2021 | BK News Service

There has been a spurt in the number of encounters and militancy-related violence in Kashmir after India and Pakistan took fresh vows to respect the 2003 Line of Control ceasefire agreement.

“Only two encounters had taken place between militants and security forces from January 1 to February 15. However, in over a month since the ceasefire agreement, there have been at least eight encounters in the Valley,” a report said.
The agreement was signed on February 15 between the high-level military officers of India and Pakistan who vowed to strictly observe border ceasefire along the Line of Control in Kashmir.
After the agreement, reports said 16 militants including two top commanders of Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad outfits were killed in eight encounters since the border ceasefire pact.
Only three militants were killed in the two encounters this year before February 15, reports said.
There has been a spike in militant attacks on security personnel which has resulted in the killing of two police men and two CRPF jawans. Besides, the son of the owner of a popular non vegetarian eatery in Srinagar was also killed this year.
