The summer capital Srinagar, which remains politically charged as "gone to dogs". The city which has its historical importance and value is witnessing dwindling level of development from over couple of years. This city is fast emerging on urbanization and there is no check on the various levels of menaces pertaining in the City. There may or may not be some relief to the people of Srinagar city after the change of guard at Srinagar Municipal Corporation. That only time will tell us. However the increasing number of stray dogs have made the life of people miserable. As the people stayed indoors due to Covid -19 lockdown, the dog bite cases in Srinagar city have fallen in as compared to the previous years. Official records available with Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) suggest that, in the year 2012-13, a total number of dog bite cases reported from Srinagar city were 7000 which decreased to 6041 in the year 2013-14. In the year 2014-15 the dog bite cases were 4917 and in the year 2015-16 it had reached to 5100. In the previous year 2019 till November a total number of dog bite cases were 3423 which is very low as compared to previous years. Officials though attribute the low dog bite rate to some scientific strategies which include minimizing the availability of garbage and animal birth control and anti-rabies vaccination program. By minimizing the availability of garbage, the proliferation rate of stray dogs has been controlled to a greater extent. The SMC has been able to control stray dog population to a great extent by adopting scientific strategies. Although, we haven’t achieved 100 percent targets but our efforts will continue to further minimize it. The official said that at national level in India the dog bite cases are 1200 per one lakh population, while as in Srinagar city, it is only 340 per 100,000 populations. The closing of open garbage sheds and collection of door-to-door garbage has discouraged spread of dog menace. There was a decline in poultry, hotel, and market waste due to unrest for months that is also a reason for the decline in dog bite cases. According to Chief Sanitation officer From past few years, we have closed down 300 open garbage sheds across city. SMC employees go door-to-door for the collection of garbage to avoid its accumulation. According to officials the multiple strategies were adopted to control the dog menace in the city otherwise the dog bite cases would have touched alarming level.
